The mission of the NLAPW Tampa Branch is to:
Recognize, encourage and promote the production of creative work of professional standard in Art, Letters, and Music and provide educational, creative, and professional support to members and non-members.
History of the Tampa Branch
The Tampa Branch was organized in 1936.
As more women from all over the nation expressed an interest in membership within National League of American Pen Women, “National” decided we needed to organize under their umbrella with like governing rules. Thus, the charter system was established. In 1938 Tampa Branch received its charter - number #83, meaning we were the 83rd branch that was organized before the charter system was put in place. Our first President, Maude Martin DuLaney was elected in 1938.
At one time the Tampa Bay area had two branches, the Tampa Branch and the Davis Island Branch. In 1992, the Davis Island Branch merged with Tampa.
We have met in many restaurants over the years but always hold our annual Holiday party in a member's home where we celebrate with song and a pot-luck luncheon.
We have had two members that led the Florida State organization as President. They were Jonie Maschek and Meletha Everett. The state organization was declared to be known as FSA (Florida State Association) in 2004 under Meletha Everett, past president, so it would not be confused with any other branch or organization.
Meletha is a Lifetime Member and the longest-serving member of the Tampa Branch.
